Meeting on October 11th at Slynedales
Dr Birtle who was booked for her bi-annual chat was tied up with rehearsals for her after hours activity, Peter Pan the musical that she is appearing in at Lancaster’s Grand Theatre November 15th–19th. Quite a change from her day job. Graham has donated tickets for the show to be raffled at the Road show event that we are holding in conjunction with cancer Research Uk at the Strathmore hotel on Morecambe promenade thursday 27th October. This is a talk about clinical trials related to prostate cancer the main speaker is Dr Alison Birtle.
In Dr Birtle’s absence we treated the evening as an at home. In the past month Michael Parker and Den Bray have attended events organised by Macmillan at Brockholes near Preston, Prostate cancer UK at the Christie and Morecambe Bay Cancer partnership in Barrow in Furness. We gave brief reports on these meetings. The most interesting was the one held at the Christie in Manchester, the AGM of Prostate Cancer Support. Three speakers gave presentations the most interesting was by Professor Robert Thomas who holds the title’s “Hospital Doctor of the year” & ” Oncologist of the year” He lectures at Cranfield and Cambridge Universities.
His presentation was basically following the mantra you are what you eat. He encouraged us to exercise and eat sensibly. Four of the foods that he recommended Broccoli, Green Tea, Pomegranate & Turmeric we bought to our meeting as prizes in our raffle which was won by our newest member David Wilson at his first meeting. The rest of the meeting was taken up with discussions on clinical trials from those members that had been involved in trials which proved informative.
Slide number 73 shows the reasons that those four particular foods are beneficial.
Slide number 63 shows the BAD foods. He mentioned the cup of Mcdonald’s Fries, top right, as being GOOD. However he then qualified that as against the pile of Pringles which he described as the devils own concoction, recipe for every diet related disease known to man not least of all because it’s impossible to open a tube of Pringles and just eat four.
Our next meeting November 8th with Urology CNS Lorraine Rigg look forward to seeing you all there.
